MY AWAKENING

The First Touchpoint with Feminism and Gender Equality

I first became interested in feminism through the speeches of Emma Watson, a woman I admire not only for her intelligence and confidence, but also for the way she transforms knowledge into action. In her 2014 United Nations speech “HeForShe”, she said that equality is not a battle between genders, but a journey of understanding and companionship. That message stayed with me for a long time, making me realize that a woman’s strength does not solely lie in speaking up, but also in her ability to listen, to empathize, and to create meaningful connections.

From then on, I began to observe the world around me through a different lens. I saw the presence and value of women in the simplest corners of life: in mothers, teachers, friends; in history, memory, and every layer of Vietnamese and global culture. Some women are bold and outspoken; others are quiet yet unyielding. Some fight through their voices, others through their perseverance and kindness. Each of them carries a story, and I want to listen to those stories through the language I understand best: art.

This journey has led me to projects like SheWalks, where I tell women’s stories through visual narratives, and The Echo of Hue, where I explore the feminine strength woven into imperial culture and its resonance in the modern world. Over time, I have come to understand that art is not only something to be admired which is a way to give voice to the women who have, are, and will continue to shape the world around us.
